First Nations Engagement
We help proponents engage respectfully, early and in the right order, so that the relationship can carry the project rather than the other way around.
Who it is for
Industry, Government, and Institutions Working in Territory.
Companies proposing projects on or near traditional territory. Government departments and agencies with consultation obligations. Institutions, from utilities to health authorities, whose operations touch communities they have not worked with before.
What these clients have in common is a genuine intention and an incomplete picture. Most engagement problems we see are not bad faith. They come from engaging late, engaging with the wrong people, or arriving with a plan already fixed.
Our role is on the proponent's side of that work. We do not speak for any Nation. Each community sets its own priorities and its own process, and our job is to help clients understand and respect both.
Our principles
How We Approach Engagement.
Early, Before Decisions Harden
Engagement that begins after a design is locked can only produce objections. Beginning while the design is still movable is what makes participation meaningful.
Relationship Before Transaction
The first conversation should not contain an ask. Relationship development is a standing commitment, not a project phase that closes.
The Community's Process, Not the Project's
Councils meet on their own schedule, community consultation takes the time it takes, and there are seasons when nothing will move. A project schedule that ignores this creates conflict it did not need.
Protocol Taken Seriously
Names spelled correctly, Elders acknowledged properly, honoraria handled as a matter of course. Small things that signal whether the rest will be handled well.
The work
How an Engagement Typically Unfolds.
Every community and every project is different. This is the general shape of our support.
- 01
Stakeholder Mapping
Nations, organizations and individuals with an interest in the project, with authority, influence and engagement history set out for each.
- 02
Engagement Strategy
Sequence, timing and approach, built around community processes rather than the project schedule.
- 03
Facilitation
Meetings arranged, briefed and supported, with the proponent prepared before rather than corrected after.
- 04
Engagement Record
A documented record of what was raised, what was committed, and what happened next. Useful commercially and essential for regulatory purposes.
Cultural awareness
Orientation for Teams Working in Territory.
Practical sessions for project teams, site supervisors and executives: the history that explains present-day positions, the protocol that governs how meetings run, and the specific errors that damage a relationship in the first hour.
This is not a checkbox training product. It is scoped to the territories a team will actually work in, because the answer to almost every question is territory-specific.
- Territory-specific rather than generic
- Delivered for project teams, supervisors, and executives
- Grounded in the relationships and history relevant to your project
- Practical: what to do, what not to do, and why

Tell us what you are working on.
Whether you are a Nation weighing a development opportunity or a company entering a new territory, the first step is a conversation — not a proposal.
